Weddings in Crete: The Blog
February 2010
February and a busy month in Greece - Carnival month! And for us our first wedding of 2010 will take place on
16th February in Rethymnon, so we are hoping the sunny weather we have had so far this month continues!
For those of you planning on getting married between end of May and September, Easyjet are now selling
direct flights to Chania airport four times a week. These flights are of course in addition to the charter
flights operated by other companies which usually arrive on a Tuesday.

January 2010
Sorry to all those following what Weddings in Crete is up to during the Winter ... I didn't manage to
do a December note as the first half of my month was taken up with preparations for our Christmas trip to the UK ...
and it was a lovely break, cold and snowy but very pretty and luckily snow did not inconvenience us at all.
Back from -3o to 20º !!! Christmas in Crete was apparently hot and many were swimming on Boxing Day!
Perhaps couples that want winter weddings should reconsider Crete in November and December - visit our beautiful
island when there are no tourists and enjoy Crete as the Cretans do!
January came and while the North of Europe freezes we still enjoyed high temperatures and lots of sun for the
first half of this winter month ... only now in middle January are we seeing some rain!
Lots of couples are now enquiring for 2011 and we are taking bookings already, although of
course it is hard for us to give estimates of costs when the season of 2010 has not begun yet! There are even
some late bookers for 2010. When we can we do try to help late bookers; but if they choose very
popular times then we cannot - bespoke weddings require a lot of time and attention so that every couple get the
day they dream of, and we can only achieve this by limiting the bookings we take.
If you are thinking of getting married this year, consider October, as the weather is still great, there are
not many tourists around, and you can travel cheaper ...

November 2009
After a very rainy October, November arrived with sunshine and even some swimming ... plus meeting a lovely couple
from Greece and Poland, living in Sweden, who are getting married next September here in Chania. Theirs will be
a Greek Orthodox wedding. The end of the official tourist season means the roads are much quieter, and we are
taking advantage of this to research honeymoon suites in various parts of Crete ... those that stay open all
year of course! A lot of Crete closes down during the winter months which makes planning a little
difficult, but fortunately our network of connections built up over many years means we can often contact owners
out of season - although its very hard to pin them down with prices!!
So a quiet month -giving us time to enjoy the raw beauty of Crete in the sun, the White Mountains once again
snow topped and the land regaining its green after the parched summer.

October 2009
October has come looking much hotter and more settled than September was ... and we can take a break now that
weddings for 2009 have finished. We are starting earlier in 2010; our first wedding will be in February next
year so we are looking forward to planning a Cretan 'winter' wedding!
Perhaps couples don't usually think about Crete as a winter wedding destination, because the charter flights
do not come to Crete in the winter ... but the weather can be very good especially in November and December,
and Crete has a different feel when the tourists have gone home. Aegean Airlines flies to Chania from Athens
several times a day all through the year as do Olympic Air and Athens Airways.

September 2009
Well September gave us a shock this year - heavy rain and thunderstorms, very unusual!
We rushed around changing a wedding from rainy Friday to sunny Sunday - and the results were great,
a lovely wedding near the beach, in the sun!
Bookings are coming in fast now, so anyone thinking of
getting married in September or June next year should contact us soon.
Meantime the weather has settled back to sunny and hot, and we are travelling around the island preparing
for the last weddings of 2009.
24th: The weather here continues to be cloudy and threatening rain, so unusual for September!
In the meantime we have our new site in French, www.mariageencrete.com
up and running, so we are looking forward to adding a new nationality to our ever-growing list of weddings
for couples from all over the world marrying on this beautiful island.

August 2009
The hottest and the busiest month in Crete, the month where Athens shuts down and half of its population come here!!
The roads are full - and that's not including the rental cars - and it takes twice as long to get anywhere.
The biggest problem for us is that the Town Hall employees take their annual summer holiday this month,
making it very hard to organise the paperwork as the system here does not provide a replacement for the all
important Registrar ... so if she is away, everything stops!!
Luckily we are experienced in this and never take wedding bookings for any date around 15th August,
the biggest bank holiday in Greece.

July 2009
The calm before the storm ... this year nobody wanted to get married in July - they all chose August instead so we have been quiet; preparing for the next month and taking bookings for 2010. We are so pleased to have met Canon Clark who is performing Protestant wedding blessings for our couples; he recently moved permanently to Crete and is a wonderful person with a great sense of humour and a lot of Christian tolerance!!

June 2009
A hot month with weddings on both sides of Crete and from different parts of the world. Our first Swedish
wedding and we learnt a few things ... Swedish people love to party, and drink Green Apple Vodka - nice!!
We also had a special heart flower decoration made especially for Linda and Jonas ... sitting in front
of flowers like this is a Swedish tradition too.
At the other side of the island we managed to find a quiet part of Herssonisos for our Irish couple,
and saw another first: the men arrived at the venue with their clothes still on hangers, putting on their
waistcoats, jackets and ties under some convenient trees!
At the end of June we had an English - New Zealand wedding in a wonderful location near Chania ...
photos coming soon ...

May 2009
At last summer is here and the temperatures settled after 15 May. We had to change a wedding date from
4 May to 7 because of rain - very unusual for this time of year ...
Luckily we were able to persuade the
photographer, hairdresser, car hire and chauffeur to change the date and the Canadian couple were able
to have a lovely sunny wedding three days later than originally planned.

April 2009
Spring is in the air but the weather is still unsettled and a lot of tavernas and restaurants have decided not to open until May this year. This makes booking receptions a bit difficult as no one has decided their prices yet ... but it's all part of being a Wedding Planner in Crete!

March 2009
It is such a pity that the Bishop of Santorini and Crete decided late last summer to stop allowing weddings for Catholic foreigners NOT living in Crete or Santorini. It seems a very unfair decision and I had hoped that he would change his mind, but having spoken to the Catholic priest in Heraklion today, he confirmed that the decision holds and that no Catholic weddings are possible in Crete to anyone who is not resident.
